Balance & Fall Prevention

Balance is at the core of what we do.  Not only is balance a part of our name, but it’s our mission to stop people from falling. Just about everyone has experienced a fall at some point after losing their balance or tripping over something. Although common, falls can be dangerous and lead to various injuries or even death. Fortunately, the most common causes of falling are preventable. Over one in four Americans, ages 65 and above –29% of seniors –fall annually. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention states: “The risk of falling increases proportionately with age.”

Falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and the most common cause of nonfatal, trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults. Every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall, and every 19 minutes an older adult dies from a fall. Falls are preventable, but early intervention is key. Falling is not an inevitable result of aging; there are steps to take to improve balance and decrease the chances of falling.
